A GTA 6 preorder now costs $79.99, the game arrives on November 19, 2026, and most of what you can read about it is a countdown.
Two things are worth knowing before you spend the money, and neither gets much attention. The box has no disc in it. And a GTA 6 preorder stays refundable right up until the moment you press preload, which is a deadline nobody advertises.
Key takeaways
- Release is November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. There is no announced PC version.
- $79.99 standard, $99.99 Ultimate.
- The physical edition contains a download code, not a disc. Once redeemed it can’t be traded in or resold.
- A digital preorder can be canceled for a full refund, but preloading on November 12 ends that on PlayStation.
- There’s no PC build, no demo and no beta, so every “GTA 6 download” and “early access key” circulating today is false.

Where the GTA 6 preorder stands today
The date has moved twice. Rockstar announced a 2025 window in December 2023, pushed it to May 26, 2026 in an announcement on May 2, 2025, then pushed it again on November 6, 2025 to November 19, 2026.
Take-Two has reaffirmed that date twice since. First in its fiscal 2026 fourth-quarter results in May, then in its first-quarter results on August 6, 2026. The extended look premiered on Netflix on August 27, on schedule. Nothing since has suggested the date is moving.
Which platforms
PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. That’s the entire confirmed list, taken from Take-Two’s own press release.
Rockstar has never announced a PC version and has never ruled one out. Plenty of coverage says PC was “confirmed” as a later release. There’s no Rockstar statement behind that. Grand Theft Auto V reached consoles in September 2013 and PC in April 2015, which is the basis for most of the guessing. Treat any PC date you read as a guess.
No PlayStation 4, Xbox One or Switch 2 version has been announced. Rockstar also hasn’t said there won’t be one. Those are different things, and the coverage tends to blur them.
The price, in context
| Edition | US price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $79.99 | The single-player game |
| Ultimate | $99.99 | Adds premium vehicles, weapons and apparel |
The $20 gap buys vehicles, weapons and clothing. Rockstar describes them as “threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia’s story,” which is careful wording: it stops short of promising extra story and stops short of ruling it out. Nobody outside Rockstar knows which.
On whether $79.99 is expensive: Nintendo moved first, charging $80 for Mario Kart World in June 2025. Elden Ring’s Switch 2 edition came in at $80 in August 2026. Borderlands 4 launched at $70 in 2025 after Gearbox’s chief executive floated $80 and the reaction went badly. So $80 is now the ceiling of the market and GTA VI sits at it rather than above it.
Take-Two’s chief executive Strauss Zelnick told investors in August that maximizing price wasn’t the aim. More useful is what the company said on the earnings call the next morning, August 7. Preorders had been exceptional but, in its own words, “remain cancelable.” The company is telling its own investors that buyers can still walk away.
Does the GTA 6 physical edition come with a disc?
No, and this is the detail that changes the money. A code-in-box release is one where the retail package holds a redemption code rather than the game itself. Rockstar’s own announcement, as reported at the time, states that physical copies contain a code redeemable for the digital download and that a disc will not be included in the box.
Three consequences follow, and all of them cost you money:
- You can’t trade it in. A redeemed code has no resale value. The buy-it-physical-and-sell-it-later approach doesn’t work on this release.
- You can’t lend it. The code binds to one account.
- An opened box generally isn’t returnable. Retailers treat game codes differently from sealed discs, because the code may already have been used.
Two specialty retailers, Video Games Plus and Loot Box Gaming, refused to stock it over this. Video Games Plus said it has spent nearly 40 years “supporting physical media and preserving the value of physical game ownership.” A niche position, but the reasoning is the one that affects your wallet.
This isn’t only a Rockstar habit, either. Elden Ring’s Switch 2 edition pairs a cartridge with a download code. If you were planning to buy the box so you could sell it in January, buy the download instead and save the trip.
How to cancel a GTA 6 preorder

You can. Preloading is downloading the game files in advance so it runs the moment the clock strikes; on PlayStation it’s also what ends your right to a refund. Here’s what each storefront’s own policy says about a GTA 6 preorder, and where the traps are.
| Where you bought it | Can you cancel? | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Store | Yes, before release date | Not once you start the preload |
| Microsoft Store / Xbox | Yes, before release | Charged up to 10 days early; cancel in Order history |
| Rockstar Games Store | Physical orders, via Xsolla | No preorder window published |
| Best Buy | Yes, before it ships | Returns must be unopened, and this box is a code |
| GameStop, Walmart | Nothing published | Ask before you rely on it |
| Amazon | Before it enters shipping | Also has a Pre-Order Price Guarantee |
Can you cancel a GTA 6 preorder after preloading?
On PlayStation, no. Sony’s refund policy makes a preordered game refundable before the release date on one condition: the main part of the content must not have been downloaded or preloaded.
Preload opens on November 12. So a PlayStation buyer’s real cancellation deadline is whichever comes first: the moment they start that preload, or the end of November 18. Sony also notes that if you cancel, any extra content stops working.
One wrinkle if you’re reading this close to launch. Sony’s rule splits in two. Order more than 14 days out and the window runs to the release date. Order inside the final 14 days and the window is 14 days from purchase, which can extend past launch day. Either way, downloading or preloading the main content ends it.
If you’re undecided, don’t preload. It feels like getting ahead. It’s actually closing your own exit.
How to cancel a GTA 6 preorder on Xbox
Microsoft’s preorder page says you can cancel any preorder online through Order history, and that canceling after billing but before release is processed as a refund. Paying from Microsoft account balance charges you immediately; other payment methods may be charged up to 10 days before release.
Rockstar Store, Best Buy, GameStop, Walmart and Amazon
Rockstar’s own store sells the physical edition, and its preorder FAQ routes those cancellations to Xsolla, its payment processor. Rockstar hasn’t published a preorder-specific window. Its familiar 14-day refund rule covers digital purchases through the Rockstar Games Launcher on PC. This game doesn’t launch on PC, so don’t assume that rule covers you.
Best Buy doesn’t charge until the item ships and lets you cancel any time before then, but its return rule requires the item to be unopened. Since the box is a code, opening it is the point of no return.
GameStop’s published return policy says nothing about preorders at all, and Walmart publishes no preorder terms either. Amazon doesn’t publish a cancellation window, but it does publish a Pre-Order Price Guarantee. If the price drops between your order and release day, you pay the lower one. Check the retailer’s own help page before you rely on anything, including this article.
Which choice fits you
- Want to be able to change your mind: buy digital, and don’t preload.
- Want the preorder bonus: any purchase before November 20 qualifies, including on launch day.
- Want protection if the price drops: Amazon is the only one publishing a price guarantee.
- Want to resell it afterward: you can’t, on any platform or at any retailer.
GTA 6 preorder bonus deadline, and what GTA+ actually gives you
Everyone who buys before November 20, 2026 gets the Vintage Vice City Pack. You don’t need to preorder months ahead to qualify. Buying on launch day still counts.
Digital preorders also include a free month of GTA+. Read the fine print carefully. The benefits described, including money deposited into a character’s bank account, apply to GTA Online in Grand Theft Auto V. Rockstar has described GTA VI as a single-player experience and hasn’t announced an online mode. The subscription is a perk for a different game.
Every GTA 6 download offer is a scam, and you can prove it
A test that doesn’t ask you to judge a website. Most scam advice does. This one doesn’t, because the platform facts settle it before you look at anything.
As things stand today there’s no PC version, no demo, no beta and no early access program. So any site offering a GTA 6 download, a PC build, a beta key or early access is lying, and you don’t have to assess how convincing it looks.
This isn’t theoretical. In research published on August 24, 2026, Malwarebytes documented fake Rockstar sites impersonating the Netflix extended look, timed to Rockstar’s own marketing. The “Play Now” button delivered a 1.1 MB file called gta6_installer.exe. It carried Vidar, an information stealer that takes browser passwords, cookies and session tokens.
Session tokens are the part worth understanding. They’re created after you’ve already logged in, so a stolen one walks past two-factor authentication. If you’ve run something like this, change your passwords from a different device, sign out of everything everywhere, then watch the accounts.
Malwarebytes offers one test that needs no security knowledge at all: a one-megabyte executable can’t contain a modern game. Whatever it is, it isn’t Grand Theft Auto.
McAfee cataloged six variants in August: fake downloads, fake early access, malware in cheats and mods, fake mobile versions, distribution through YouTube and Discord, and fake giveaways. For scale, McAfee says a separate campaign aimed at Minecraft players has infected over 116,000 devices since January 2026, at 2,000 to 3,000 a day.
What nobody actually knows
Written down plainly, because the confident version of this list is everywhere and it’s invented.
- Whether a PC version exists, when, at what price, or on which store.
- Whether there will be an online mode, at launch or later.
- Whether standard buyers can upgrade to Ultimate content, and at what price.
- How many preorders have been placed. Take-Two said “exceptional” and disclosed no number.
- The official ESRB rating. Rockstar’s own page still shows it as not yet rated.
- Whether a disc version will ever exist.
- Whether November 19 holds.
Common questions
Should I place a GTA 6 preorder now or wait?
A GTA 6 preorder buys you nothing that waiting doesn’t, as long as you buy before November 20. Digital copies don’t sell out. Two exceptions. A physical box, where the bonus is limited by stock. And Amazon, where the price guarantee means ordering early carries no downside.
Will it be cheaper later?
Rockstar titles hold demand unusually well. Grand Theft Auto V sold more copies in 2020 than in any year since its 2013 launch and was still earning hundreds of millions a year a decade in. What we couldn’t find is any published price history for it, so treat “Rockstar games never go on sale” as folklore rather than fact.
Do I need a PS5 or Xbox Series X?
Yes, and this is the real expense. There’s no announced version for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch 2 or PC. Console prices have also risen twice in a year. A PS5 with a disc drive is $649.99 after an April 2026 increase. Xbox raised its whole range again on August 1, 2026, putting the Series X at $799.99 and the cheapest Series S at $499.99.
One thing worth noticing before you pay for a disc drive. Because GTA VI ships as a download code even inside the box, a disc drive buys you nothing whatsoever on this particular game.
Is the Ultimate edition worth $20 more?
It adds premium vehicles, weapons and apparel. Rockstar hasn’t said it adds story missions. If you’ve never paid extra for cosmetics in a single-player game before, this is unlikely to be the time you start.
What happens to my preorder if it’s delayed again?
Nothing automatic. A GTA 6 preorder stays open at the new date, and the cancellation rules above keep applying until then. There’s no precedent to lean on here. Preorders didn’t open until June 24, 2026, months after both delays, so nobody has yet held one through one. If a delay changes your mind, the remedy is what it is today: cancel it yourself, before you preload.
The bottom line
Buy it if you want it. Just know three dates. November 12 is when preloading starts and, on PlayStation, when your refund quietly expires. November 19 is release. November 20 is the last day the bonus applies, which means there’s no rush at all.
